UK Formula Milk Recall
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced recalls of certain batches of formula milks made by Danone (Aptamil, Cow & Gate) and Nestlé (SMA, Little Steps). These batches may contain a toxin called cereulide, which can cause food poisoning.
What symptoms does the toxin cause?
Babies may become unwell soon after drinking the formula, with:
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea
- Tummy cramps
If a baby becomes sick after using a recalled product, parents should contact their GP or call NHS 111.
What should families do?
1) Check the batch number
Only specific batches are affected.
- Look at the batch number on the tin/box
- Compare it with the FSA recall list
- Stop using it immediately if it matches a recalled batch
- Formula not on the recall list is safe to use.
The FSA also says:
- Only a limited number of batches are affected
- Most formula on sale is safe
- The recalled batches were made some time ago, so they are unlikely to still be in shops, but may be in cupboards at home.
2) Switching formula is safe
- If you’re using a recalled formula milk, switch to another brand of first infant formula
- All first infant formulas in the UK are nutritionally equivalent
- If you’re concerned about switching formula milk, speak to your health visitor, GP or call NHS 111.
3) Formula safety
If you are using formula milk to feed your baby (even if you’re using one that is not affected by the recall), you may still feel worried. Remember that:
- Formula remains a safe and appropriate option for babies
- Powdered formula is not sterile, which is why safe preparation is important
- NHS guidance recommends mixing formula with water that has been boiled and cooled to no less than 70°C (as this helps to kill any bacteria)

Babies on Special Formulas
If your baby is being fed one of the affected non-standard formulas (anti-reflux, comfort, lactose free, or Alfamino) please consult a health professional for advice on a suitable alternative.
