Celebrating Cultural Dishes in Early Years Settings

Early Years Recipes

Here at Early Start Nutrition we love reviewing nursery and childminder menus and supporting them to meet the mandatory Early Years Foundation Stage Nutrition Guidance. As we have been reviewing the menus we’ve loved seeing the range of recipes that are served to children. We’ve also seen how important it is to incorporate traditional foods from different cultures in your menus to help children feel connected to their cultural heritage.

The Early Years Foundation Stage Nutrition Guidance highlights the importance of:

  • having meals and snacks that are varied and accommodate children’s diverse cultural and dietary requirements.
  • substituting recipes and ingredients where necessary or desired to reflect the cultural backgrounds of the children being served and to take advantage of foods that are locally available and cost-effective
  • having ongoing discussions about children’s cultural and dietary needs to create a safe and inclusive environment for all children to eat

Here at Early Start Nutrition we have a range of fantastic recipes to support settings to plan their menus and we would love to include a recipe from your setting so that we can share with other early years settings.

We are looking for recipes that:

  • showcase traditional foods from traditional cultures
  • are in-line with the Early Years Foundation Stage Nutrition Guidance
  • Include ingredients, cooking method, number of servings
